MightyVine To Launch Into Its High Season And Phase II
Distribution Of Premium Local Tomatoes, January 2017
CHICAGO (November 2016) – Increasing production from four to eight million pounds of tomatoes per year is the goal for Phase II of local tomato grower MightyVine Tomatoes. The state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse, located in Rochelle, Illinois, is doubling in size to meet the strong demand for local product. Expanding from 7.5 to 15 acres will allow for increased production, as well as the introduction of exclusive chef-requested varietals. These new tomato varieties have been in the works due to the high demand from Chicago chefs and restaurants including Lula Café, Monteverde, Summer House, RPM Italian and more. MightyVine plans to increase its distribution to include over 150 restaurants and 400 grocery stores in the Midwest.
MightyVine continues its mission to grow premium tomatoes with a maximum flavor profile year-round. Providing a superior product during colder months, and to areas where high-quality produce is a rarity during the winter, is not only a goal — it’s a must. MightyVine’s hydroponic technology allows for a more consistent and sustainably grown product: using only 10 percent of the water used for growing field tomatoes, MightyVine is dedicated to minimizing its carbon footprint while supplying the Midwest market with premium, local tomatoes 52 weeks per year.
Led by CEO Gary Lazarski and COO Nic Helderman, MightyVine is a 15 acre state-of-the-art hydroponic farm, located just 75 miles west of Chicago in Rochelle, Illinois. Providing relief from one of winter's cruelest impositions, the tasteless tomato, MightyVine harvests daily, supplying the Midwest market with 8 million pounds of tomatoes, 52 weeks a year. Initial planting is focused on two varieties of on-the-vine, premium glasshouse tomatoes: the MightyVine Roterno and MightyVine Robinio, a slicing tomato and sweet cherry tomato, respectively. These varietals, exclusively grown in the United States by MightyVine, were chosen for their intense tomato flavor, rather than their ability to be trucked across the continent. MightyVine tomatoes are responsibly grown under pristine conditions, utilizing the best industry practices and the latest greenhouse technology, using only 10 percent of the water used for field grown tomatoes. Working under the mantra that the best tasting tomatoes are grown closest to home, MightyVine provides restaurants and retailers in the greater Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison area with premium local tomatoes harvested at the peak of ripeness and immediately delivered to the market within hours of being picked, not weeks.
